Do you live in or own land in Pickens County?
Then the recent decision regarding hefty fire fees concerns YOU!
Recently, the Pickens County Council representatives let an additional and unfair fee slip through the cracks of their 2015-2016 budget.
On the third and final reading of the budget, council members added a line item stating that anyone who owned a parcel without a house or building on it would pay a fire fee.
Here are the problems with this action:
- Fire protection on vacant land is already covered by the SC Forest Commission and paid for by state taxpayers.
- The fire fee itself is not fair within the vacant property owners segment. If you own 1,000 acres, you pay a $320.00 fee. If you own 10 parcels of 100 acres (the same amount of land), you pay a $1600.00 fee.
- When the Rural Fire Districts were formed, it was stated that there must be a public meeting held with a notice running in the local papers for three weeks prior to the meeting stating the meeting’s intentions. No such notice made it to the papers.
We’ve heard from concerned citizens and agree that the additional fire fee (and its stipulations) are unfair and need to be repealed!
