No doubt you’ve heard or read a lot about House Bill 4717 in the past few months, and there’s a good reason why.
For South Carolina farmers devastated by the 1,000 year flood in October 2015, this bill is their last real chance for disaster relief.
The Palmetto Farm Aid Fund was authored by Chairman Brian White and you can find more information about the specifics of the bill on savescfarmers.com.
During debate on this bill, some of your lawmakers have discussed developing a loan program instead of the grant program this bill was designed to create.
That just won’t work.
Farmers need relief quickly. They lost entire inventories last October after incurring a year’s worth of expenses. They were in debt on loans that had to be paid at the end of the year, but the paycheck never came.
H. 4717 creates a workable grant program that is the best and only way to stimulate South Carolina’s economy right now. Not next year, or in the year’s to come, but right now.
Creating a costly lending bureaucracy within our state government would only draw out the recovery process and place our struggling farmers even further in debt.
We cannot wait another day to save our farmers. Tell your senators to support H. 4717.
